Review: Iron: Eurosteam Next Generation

I think an item most quilters ask about is an iron. I had a Rowenta Professional Iron that I used for almost 10 years before it sprung a leak. It was one good multipurpose iron. I wanted to try something new for a change. Earlier this year I saw the Euro Steam iron being sold at the NJ Garden State Quilt Show. The odd thing about this iron is that it is either available online or via an independent seller. You cannot walk into a store and buy it. I was impressed by the demo sessions and bought it. It arrived home by mail a few weeks later.

I have now been using it for a few months and here is my review on it.

I do love the iron, but if you believe that steam and quilting don't match this iron is not for you. Without steam this iron is nothing. It's all in the power of steam. To lay it out clearly:

Pros
Cons

  • A great steam iron, can iron multiple layers of fabric at a time.
  • Does not work that well without steam.
  • The ceramic faceplate ensures there is no burning or scorching.
  • It's high pressured steam so the cover to the water compartment is airtight and must be opened only when the iron cools down. There is a wait time between filling the water tank.
  • Can iron out wrinkles from almost any fabric type, wool, silk, chiffon, georgette, etc. You can even steam cushions and upholstery with it.
  • A bit on the heavy side but that works in it's favor.
  • Lifetime warranty
  • Not ideal for foundation paper piecing.
  • Irons seams really well, no starch required. It has a great sharp point for opening seams too.

  • Need to use filtered or bottled water only.
  • Very sturdy construction.

  • No dealers available locally. Everything needs to be done via mail.
  • Great for ironing large fabric pieces like quilt backs, etc. If you tend to prewash all your fabric this is the iron for you.

  • Expensive.

From the list above it seems the cons out weigh the pros but I do like the iron and it's performance. It's seems very sturdy and atleast seems to give the impression that it will last a while. Unfortunately it's not the only iron you will need in case you do a lot of paper piecing and applique.

Disclaimer: The opinions presented here are mine and mine only. I have purchased these items on my own and have not been compensated or influenced in anyway by the vendor or the re-seller. I do not have any affiliations with them either.

  3. Interesting... the pointy tip looks useful too. I'm not sure I'd like having to use steam all the time, though.

  4. Best iron for me, and I'm a quilt maker, I sew every day, is an inexpensive Proctor Silex for under $20 that I got at the hardware store. I've had no luck with expensive irons, including two or three by Rowena, and will never again spend $100+ for an iron. Just sayin'

  5. I have a nifty little ironing station right next to my sewing machine (you can see it at http://www.wineberryfabrics.com/wf/wineberry-exclusives/made-by-bob.html...I love this thing and miss it like crazy when on courses) and because space was so limited I put a cordless Panasonic iron there. LOVE that iron! It is hot, hot enough and steams nicely, and while I had doubts the cordless thing really works well. It is 6 years old now but going strong, would not hesitate to get another. It is fab to be able to sew, turn slightly, press, and so forth.

  6. I've had 2 Euro-Pro steam generator irons over 15 years time: the first one lasted 7 years, the second one I've had for over 8 years now. Spent a total of $500 for both so that works out to about $33 per year. I'd say that's pretty good for an iron. But the Euro-Pro steam generator iron is no longer made, so there is now a Euro-Steam iron. I'm leaning toward buying one!!

  7. It's a great steam iron and recommend it! I wish it came with a lifetime warranty but it doesn't. It has a 1 year repair warranty. I never wait for my iron to cool down, I just depressurize it and slowly refill with water.

  9. Hello!! I'm trying to put an applique with glue on it on my jean jacket using this steam iron but i cant find information anywhere if its possible to use this off the steam setting and if it'd be okay to use it sans the steam for one applique in the first place!! I'd greatly appreciate if you could get back to me on this or if you could email me as soon as you can, my email is mlucyhebert@gmail.com :^) thank you!

  13. I had a defected one, like many customers from another review site. My iron was constantly leaking and ruined my $300 grad dress with brown water it spit out. I asked company for exchange and they refused, told me to ship it back to Calgary for repair. Not sure why they couldn't exchange at the location I bought it. Anyway I am very disappointed at the company policy. If you get a defected model "good luck"

  17. I purchased the eurosteam next generation iron model 6199 about 2 years ago. It worked great for that time then it just quit working. The warranty was for 1 year but I called the USA customer service to ask about what might have caused it to quit. They were absolutely no help but said I could send it in for repairs for about the same price I purchased it for. Consumer Beware! This product is a rip off for the price!
