Memory Quilts - Part 2

I did mention two quilts from the shirts in the last post. With one quilt done, I was left with the light and really dark colored shirts. I began to look around for patterns and spotted the victory block pattern by VFWQuilts. I liked the boldness of the block against the background and thought it would work really well for the fabrics I had at hand.

I initially made a few blocks and arranged them till I was happy with the configuration. This could be a very busy design based on how the blocks were arranged so I grouped some of the like colors together to calm the visual.

For the backing, I was running on fumes. I literally threw in every thing I had left on hand.

Next came the quilting. Since I had hand quilted the previous one and loved the feel of it, I decided to do the same for this one. I shadowed the block on both sides of the seam as before but for the big square in the center I ordered a custom template. They have a huge selection and it took me a while to find the perfect fit. I used Coats and Clark hand quilting thread in Natural for the light blocks and in Green for the dark blocks.

I had set aside a stripped shirt for the binding and it worked wonderfully.

The quilting detail at the back really came across and the quilt had a soft well worn feel.

Finished in January of 2023

I used a more formal photograph as a label for this quilt.
