Parcel post

Look what arrived in a parcel from my mum today. It's a ready made strip pieced quilt top. According to her it was available as a bale of fabric that you could just get yardage from. I quite like the colors and the cotton is voile like. After a wash (under the assumption it does not run color) it would make a really soft quilt. It almost calls for hand quilting.

Pencil case

I have been itching to make a pouch or purse for a while now so decided to start with something simple. I used this tutorial to come up with some pencil cases. Not perfect but like the way they turned out. I decided to make one with muted colors and one with stronger colors. Here you go.

For the first one I used Kokka linen I had in my stash and the other one is made with left over Marvel comic fabric from my quilt in progress. The green chinese lantern print is from Amy Butler's Lark collection.

This is not an advert for Nikon. I used my camera lens cover for some added weight while I was taking the picture. :) Next I am going to try some pillow covers...

Marvel comic quilt top completed

Just completed the Marvel comic quilt top. It turned out a bit serious looking IMO but hey this is really not my style and I am trying to flex to please a to be 5 year old. I decided to use Robert Kaufman Quilter's Linen in Straw and Charcoal instead of Kona solids as it gives a bit more texture than a flat color. I think I prefer these to solids and ordered a few more yards in different colors. Here is the quilt top.

For the back I put together a panel of my Kapow blocks. I ran out of the Straw colored linen fabric, have ordered more, but till it arrives I have to twiddle my thumbs. Can't wait to get this done.

Lastly created binding for the quilt. I think this will frame the quilt nicely and add some much needed color on the edges.

Polka dot collection

I recently updated my stash with some polka dots. I had none even though it's apparently a quilting basic. I got this 18 fat quarter bundle from Fabricworm too. It's Michael Miller's Ta-Dot collection.

New fabric

I recently took advantage of the pre-cut bundle sale at Fabricworm and got myself some scrumptious fabric. Mod Basics Organic cotton by Jay-Cyn Design for Birch fabrics. I love the muted colors. So ready for spring.

Kapow blocks

Came up with a few more blocks. I call these the Kapow blocks as they are modeled after the spirally image that I remember from watching Batman and Robin on television as a kid. These were a bit tricky but a lot of fun to make. I will type up a tutorial later.

A view of the seams at the back. It requires a few trips to the ironing board before it's complete.

Conceptualizing a new quilt

I have been making a lot of things which are more geared for my niece so the nephew is feeling a bit left out. In my defense, he is a 5 year old with a mind of his own and I cannot expect him to like anything I make. After a lot of thought I decided to stray from my usual likes and make something that would catch his attention.

I really didn't have a design in mind when I started this project. The fabric is just too noisy for my taste. It made me a bit dizzy frankly. I attempted to fussy cut the initial block but then gave up. I decided to cut it based on how the fabric made me feel. Here are the first two blocks.
